Skin Talks Back - A Fictional Short Story By Richard Moran

Picture it... early morning a couple begins to stir in the bed.  However, their skin wakes before them.  The skin talks, not to their owner, but to one another.  I kid you not.  They speak the truth, not what their owners would say to one another, but the cold hard facts, and they are not pretty!  Their names you ask, their names are being withheld to protect the innocent, however the abuse done needs to be addressed for all to read, as it is horrific and it should be a crime.  For reading purposes however, we will name her skin, Vanity Lost and his, Macho Grungy.

The Early morning sunlight hides no flaws, they are naked for the world to see, if the world was in your bedroom that is.  However, your skin discusses its day every morning before you revolve to full conscious.  It is true, I kid you not, and conversations can go anything from, "So, I guess we are going to the gym today but I bet he won't bother to drink a glass of water orange juice before we go.  No, instead he will drink that god-awful coffee, and eat some damn doughnuts."  Well, you think that is bad, try going all day without ANYTHING until maybe a candy bar to take a hunger pain away around 3 to hold her off until supper"!  This is just a small example of what goes on in your bed before you awake fully.

This morning was no different then the thousands of morning before, the same complaints and insults being thrown between Vanity Lost to Macho Grungy, however it is important to bring this conversation to light, as it may be your skins' early morning conversation as well.  You too may be guilty of the horrific crime of skin abuse.  You know what I am talking about; you ladies that go to bed with your makeup still on and you men that don't bother to even remotely think about even throwing some fresh water on your face.  It is a travesty, it really is.  Well, here is what your skin is saying every morning before you wake, and let me tell you it is not pretty.  Don't say you weren't warned!

Macho Grungy wakes with a crease in his cheek and turns his head to steer into the god-awful bags he once adored.  "Hey old lady", he says, "No amount of beauty sleep is going to fix that face darling.  You might as well throw it in the bag, along with them protruding bags you have under those eyes!"

Vanity Lost grumbles and turns to look towards Macho, only to feel the repulsion creeping up the base of her neck.  She promptly replies, "Well Macho Grungy, it is a good thing this old bag just change the sheets because it is all I can do to keep from shedding my dead skin cells all over your head, however, who could tell the difference with all that dandruff your head is toting!  Do you ever even drink water or is it just beer, beer, and more beer?"

"Hey you wrinkled up piece of shoe leather, I have a boil just waiting to burst so you best watch your step missy" grunts Macho.

"That's okay you so called shield of armor, you couldn't protect anything any more with all that excess flab your toting.  You are lucky you can even make it to the doughnut shop in the morning," Vanity Lost snidely remarks.

"Hey you old biddy, I don't see you flying on by, instead I see you standing there right behind me waiting for my crumbs to drop so don't even try it little miss cellulite queen," Grunge chimes back.

"Oh, now that was just wrong!  You know how sensitive I am about my cellulite.  You act as if I wanted this to happen to me!  If she could hear me, boy would she get a piece of my mind," Vanity Lost reflects with a tone of dismay in her voice.

"For what part, the wrinkles, bags, age spots, cellulite, them so called laugh lines, what part of your mind skin would you give her?  Shall I list all your deficits"  Grunge say with a laugh to his voice.

"Hey, hold up there not so hot yourself.  I can draw up quite the list on you myself.  Have you looked in the mirror lately?  Buddy, I hate to tell you this, but you sure as heck are no prize package yourself!"  Vanity Lost pauses for a moment, and begins again "and further more..." her voice trails off and a slight whimper begins to rise.

"Oh now what..." responds Macho Grungy, "are you crying again?  You are just too damn sensitive I tell you."

Vanity Lost is now engrossed in emotions and she feels her skin begin to pop in various places.  "See, there now you did it.  I now have three more pimples to present to my queen.  Lovely!  Now she will be pinching on my face and honestly, that shit hurts.  I just hate the body I protect!  Why ol' why did I have to get stuck with her?" cries Vanity Lost.  "Why couldn't I have been the skin on that beautiful brunette or that red head at your work?"

"Hey, you had better watch out, you know how testy your queen gets when the red head is brought up" Grunge says with a roll of his skin.

"Well then, I suggest she does something about it.  Or, maybe she just doesn't care, maybe she has never loved me.  I sure don't feel like I have ever been cherished.  What more do I need to do to get her attention?  It is getting to the point that this transformation that is taking over me is getting beyond my control.  I can only do so much on my own."  The desperation could not be mistaken in Vanity Lost's tone.

"Well I could say the same thing about this loaf!  Try getting dry shaved!  Then we will talk" responds Grunge.

"Hey, I have, until my armpit skin and leg skin burned!  I have no idea what she was thinking!"  Vanity lost rebuts.

"Well, check this out!  Although Lava soap might get my grime out of my hand wrinkles, it does nothing for me but dry me out.  I swear if she wasn't watching from time to time this loaf would wash all of me with that!  Hell, you are not the only one being neglected and lacking some tender loving care.  At least you stand more of a chance then me in getting some attention."  Grunge replied with conviction.

"How do you figure that one oh so not Einstein, Grunge?"  Vanity says with an arrogant roll.

"Well, it doesn't take an Einstein Missy wanna be 16 looking like 120 at 42.  Why do you think your first name is Vanity, oh wait, that might be too difficult of a question for you, considering your one foot in the grave skin dead," Grunge says with mockery.

"Oh, now that is quite enough out of you pimple back and... oh, never mind...  Just wait until your king sits down and you will remember" Vanity lost exclaims with aggravation and then quickly out of concern says "Seriously honey, we have to do something, I am just not sure what!"

"Well Vanity, do you think you could squeeze out a few more pimples, darken them bags just a bit more and crease that forehead really good, and don't forget them laugh lines, although they are hardly anything to laugh at.  Maybe this will be the morning that instead of the Queen reading about natural skincare, she will actually buy some.  Maybe today will be the day she will start cooking healthy, eating right and drinking plenty of water to bring you back to the Vanity Love I so miss and have adored for over half my life" Grunge questions.

"I don't know Macho, do you think it will work?  I can sure try, but honey, I miss my Macho Man too!  Do you think you can bag up a little extra, sag the jaws some, and get a bit more patchy looking too" questioned Vanity in hopes that Macho Grunge's idea would work on the King as well.

"Oh honey, I wish it was as easy for us male skins.  I can do all that, but well, you know men, most just don't seem to care.  Will you still love me anyways?"  Macho pleads.

"Oh honey, of course I will.  But I am thinking once the King starts seeing the Queen look younger, he too will want to look good for her.  I mean, he doesn't want her picking up that new bag boy at the grocery store now, you know, the one that she tries to flirt with every time she goes shopping" Vanity says with a slight twinkle in her skin.

"You have a point darling.  This just might work.  If she starts cooking healthier, I will start looking better too!  Yes darling, that is why you are the real Queen in my book.  Let's start rebelling, quickly, before they wake up all the way" Macho exclaimed excitedly.

No, this, my dear friends was not the Twilight Zone.  This is a reality in bedrooms every morning around the world!  Your skin is crying out to you, begging you with every wrinkle, fine line, dry patch, bag, dark circles, and age spots for some love.  They do not want to fail you, yet you fail them daily.  Your skin is tried of trying to eliminate all the toxin and waste build up you continue to subject it to!  It wants to breath, shine, be resilient, and have that young tone and texture that you once took pride in; remember.

All your skin is asking of you is to take pride in it.  Show it the same love and devotion it shows you.  It only wants you to treat it naturally, with a natural skin care routine..  Is it really asking that much?  Listen to your skin before it is too late and your skin turns on you totally.  You will be glad you did, and so will your skin.

A Short Story of Chain Hoists

A Short Story of Chain Hoists By Jordan Swain

It is not difficult to come across various types of machinery in modern times. They ease human efforts. They are desired almost at every place. There are various types of machinery available in modern times. Some relieve human beings from putting in intellectual efforts while others relieve them from putting in manual efforts. Chain hoist is one such kind of a mechanism. They help in reducing manual efforts.

It is easy to spot a chain hoist in day to day life. They are used in lifting heavy loads. They are similar to cranes. But they are way much cheaper. You can find a chain hoist of three types in the market:

*Manual chain hoist: They are operated manually by human beings.

*Electric chain hoist: They are operated with the help of power supply.

*Air chain hoist: They are also known as pneumatic hoists and are used to lift heavy weights.

They are used in factories, industrial units, manufacturing units, constructions sites, and various other places. Any lifting that requires twenty men can be handled single handedly by these machines. This is a necessary phenomenon in various premises. Hence, their use is increasing continuously in modern times. They have come to be used in various types of premises including homes.

But it is mandatory to find a high quality product. If the chain hoist you rely on is not a good quality product, it is bound to result in fatal accidents. The least thing you would want in this world is the load that the device is lifting to fall on a man’s head! It could get him killed. Choosing an appropriate company that is reputed and experienced in the manufacture of this product is a must.

There is one more factor that needs to be considered. You need to load a weight that the chain hoist is capable of lifting. At the time of purchase, you are informed of the capacity of the machine. If you upload loads that are heavier than its capacity to carry, it is bound to make mistakes. The chain may even break and lead to undesirable consequences.

You can easily find companies that provide high quality chain hoists if you look for them in the internet. You can trust US companies the most in this matter. US chain hoist manufacturing companies have attained tremendous fame in a short duration of time. You can order for these products online. They are inexpensive and durable.

A Very Short Story - How to Write Compactly By Susan Hart

If you can write a few incredibly short, short stories -- then this will go a long way towards practice for the longer ones of over 1,000 words or more. And when we are talking about short, we mean 50-300 words. See the example below and note how it has suspense, mystery, a beginning, middle and a nice twisty ending. If you can be this compact when you write, a short story will turn out wonderfully. This one I call Primitives comes in at 262 words, and it's in my favorite genre, Sci-Fi.

Woman and cat, both long, lean and black, crouched low in the overgrown dry grass, sand and rusted remains of objects long decayed into red and lumpy masses. She, dressed in a ragged and stained piece of cloth, gestured to the cat silently. Cat, hackles raised, looked at her then slunk off and around the small hill.

Woman, using the row of dunes for cover, kept hidden as long as she could. Without taking her eyes off the animal ahead of them, she reached out and grabbed the closest thing she could find, then half crouching, threw it at the animal ahead. She hit the rabbit as cat took advantage of the stunned animal, leapt on it and with one swift bite, killed and then carried it over to the woman.

She stood up, holding the rabbit out to the cat proudly. After both admired their meal with a good degree of satisfaction, woman bent down and picked up the object she had thrown at the rabbit. She looked at it curiously then began to pocket it, but took it out again and held it in her hand. It sparkled a little, even in the putrid light which seeped through the blanket of clouds. She cleaned off the clear but cracked face of the object, stared at the numbers painted below, then shrugged and tied it to her belt.

Satisfied, the woman and the cat moved off to their shelter, the battered pocket watch swinging from her belt. Long past its original purpose, it was given a new one by its owner.

Short Story Writing - Tips to Help You Get Started

Short Story Writing - Tips to Help You Get Started By Susan Hart

A short story may be the best project for a novice writer, as it is short (obviously) and complete within itself. Short stories can go from 55 words (incredibly short) up to around 5,000 words (fairly long), but the most common word count is around 1,500-2,000.    Because it is so short, a single incident (not a lifetime) is the best subject. The story should still have a beginning, middle and end plus a nice little twist somewhere in there, perhaps at the climax.

Every word in this compact form of literature should have meaning. There is little time to convey your story, emotions and plotline. It's a good idea to read as many short stories as you can. O'Henry is the master of short stories and his The Gift Of The Magi is an incredible one. Read through that a few times to get the idea of how a short story is composed, the highs and lows, emotions and interest it conveys.   You can write short stories in any genre. First, get an idea for your story and try and either complete it in your head, or jot down the plotline on the computer or in a journal. Once complete, start in on others.

Some magazines publish single short stories, but the best way to get published is to write several in one genre, then pursue the magazines or books that publish anthologies. You can still try and get single short stories published but it is good if you have a few of them ready to go just in case. Writing a short story can be accomplished in as little as half an hour, or weeks. It does depend on the complexities. Practice being economical with words by writing one of those 55 word ones, then go up to perhaps 500 words, then 1,200 then 2,000. This will enable you to see the development.

Short stories are great fun to write. And, you can work on them almost anywhere. Don't be afraid to get going o your first one. Seeing it completed on the page will give you confidence, and because they don't take much time to write, your confidence can grow my leaps and bounds, and perhaps lead to longer writing projects.

Importance for children to write a Short Story By Quvincee Mehta

If we are read a kid story as a kid, it does will give more fun and we can enjoy it more. And we can also cognizant of the importance of the main character. In the same way if the child write story as they are in main character. It gives them inspiration and wonderful feeling to being somebody special and unique.

If a child writes a story on their family, friends, relatives or on themselves, it’s helps them to feel good of pride and also helps to improve sense of human value. Some times while writing an online story they use a phrases like – I love my cat, I am loved, I am wondering for.., I was sorry, my parents are loved me unconditionally etc. It’s not important what it’s about, but it improves their self-esteem. They feel it is a story about their nearest people hence it’s unique and important for them.

It’s not important especially for child what the age of writer is? The important is a story has a beginning, middle and an end. Generally children like a happy handing story which shows a positive attitude toward life. I think we have to learn something form child story. That’s simple enough for parents to understand their child and their attitude towards life.

By writing an online short story, children can learn many things

- How to concentrate?

- How to handle criticism?

- They will look to you (their parents, for approval etc.)

- It’s also helps to become a more sociable by promoting their own story

- Reading and vocabulary skills will improve

- And more important thing is “confidence”

If your kids have an idea on how to write a story OR if they want to become a good story writer then support them. It is possible that it doesn't turn out as they or you expected. Online story writing practicing will help them to become a fearless with pen and paper. As President Roosevelt said,” the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

Julia Valenskaya With Short Stories About Love By Olga Wright
Julia Valenskaya's One-Cup Stories Are For The Heart and Soul

Taking a short break from my usual routine during the day I stumbled upon Julia Valenskayss website and decided to read two of her One-Cup Stories entitled Everlasting Love and The Flight. Never can I say have two short stories that took all of minutes to read had such a profound effect on me.

Each word of Julia Valenskayas short stories engaged me each step of the way. These simple short stories are a must read for people who enjoy a brief break from reality from time-to-time. Her two stories Everlasting Love and The Flight are two stories from her series of One-Cup Stories, Sentimental Collection. If these two stories are any indication of what Julias other short love stories are like, I can almost guarantee that people will enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed reading these two stories.

The first story I read was Everlasting Love. This story is based in nature and is all about love. The story takes place on a very scenic beach. What I liked most about Everlasting Love is that it is provocative but in a very innocent way. While reading the story, I found myself feeling as though I was right on the shores edge with waves breaking at my feet.

Not too many authors have the ability to captivate the readers mind like Julia. I must say I was extremely impressed with her prose. Julia does a wonderful job when it comes to engaging the reader. Everlasting Love grabbed hold of me and didnt let go. It is with rare occasion that a short story that takes two minutes to read can have me at the edge of my seat wanting more.

The second story I read in Julias One-Cup Stories series was The Flight. I was delightfully surprised that I could be so amused and engaged by a story about two leaves. Julias writing style made me feel as though I was one with nature while reading this beautiful short romantic love story. This story like Everlasting Love had me wanting more.

I am happy that I came across Julias One-Cup Stories. It is not every day that I can come across a website that offers anything of true value, but now I can say that I have. Julia Valenskayas One-Cup stories is food for the soul. The stories were very stirring and uplifting. Both stories made my imagination soar to new heights. As it turns out,
Julias One-Cup Stories are quite addicting. I dont see how it is possible that people can just stop at one cup, but thats a really good thing if you are looking for a brief break from your daily routine. Even if you just have one cup, I almost guarantee that you will feel brand new after reading her amazing short love stories.

Kindergarten Stories

Kindergarten Stories By Hema Baahu

Kindergarten stories are fun to hear and read and are eagerly looked forward to by most kindergarten children. Most children grow up hearing a lot of stories. Stories are a powerful influence on us. They can not only entertain and amuse but also educate and  motivate. This can be true for not just kindergarten stories but for other stories too. Many of us would have imbibed basic values and morals from a host of stories told to us during our childhood days by our parents (perhaps more often grandparents).

Story telling is an art, and a wonderful art. A good story teller can enthrall  the audience and transport them to a different world. Who can forget the fairy tales we heard in our childhood days, when we would be cast into a different world, an entirely different world of fairies and witches, of bears that could talk and houses one could eat, a world where good was all good and bad all bad. Many of the the kindergarten stories we heard are the stories our children still hear today. So many of those precious tales have survived for generations.

Reading out stories to kindergarten children can be very educative for them. There are an enormous number of illustrated picture books, that you can read out to,  and read along with your children. Apart from spending quality time with them, you can use the opportunity to teach them so many things. A kindergarten story book can be well used to re-inforce many of the kindergarten concepts learned. You can ask the child to point out to different letters of the alphabet, count out numbers (for example, count seven bears in the picture), ask which is bigger or smaller etc. However, bear in mind that it does not become like work, for the best learning takes place when you do not think you are learning.

In addition to this, perhaps one of the best gifts you can give your child is the love of reading and a love for books. One who has this love will never be lonely, for books are man's best friends.

How to Write a Short Story

How to Write a Short Story By juenemann marchbanks

Everybody knows writing a story is not easy. Like the drama or the poem, it is imaginative literature that should appeal to the emotions of the readers. Since it communicates the writer's interpretation of reality, there must be an artistic use of language to signify human experience. But how do we write a great short story? What are the things to keep in mind in order to come up with a short story that works? Here's a quick guide to get you started:

1. Read

Reading is essential to anyone who wants to write. In order to be able to write a good short story, you must read other short stories first. This will not only give you the motivation and inspiration for your own story, but it will also help you learn how other authors made an impression on the reader and use their style as basis to create your own style and impression.

2. Get inspired

For seasoned professionals, there is no need to obtain inspiration because thoughts naturally flow and they only have to put them into words on paper. But for novice writers, it is important to have one because it will not only help you begin your first paragraph but also keep you going throughout. Your inspiration may take the form of an object. a person, or an event that you just can't seem to forget.

3. Conceptualize your story

Think of something you want to talk about with your readers. Let's say you want to relate a story about a couple who fell in love with each other. What about the couple? What is it about them that you are interested to let your readers know? Focus on this idea and think of other concepts that you want to associate with this couple. Suppose the girl's parents discommended their relationship. What about the parents? What did they do to stop the two from loving each other? This could signal a good beginning for your story. From here, you would have the notion what to write down.

4. Map out the scenes

In order to keep your writing aligned with your pre-conceived story events, it is good to briefly map out scenes of your story on a different piece of paper. Write down the possible characters of your story and list the main events in order. You don't have to put so much detail on them because this only serves as a rough sketch of how your story will look like.

5. Chooose your point of view

Who tells the story and how it is told is very critical for a short story to be effective. The point of view can change the feel and tone of the story radically. Hence, you must decide carefully before finally resolving with the angle of vision to use for your story. But whatever it is you decide to choose as the point of view, make sure it stays constant throughout your story to maintain consistency.

6. Conceive your characters

For a short story, create a maximum of only three main characters. Too many main characters will make your story confusing since each new character will provide a new dimension for the story. Each character should be more than cardboard caricatures. Make your characters speak naturally in proportion with their traits. Make them believable but mysterious.

7. Furnish a good introduction

When you have everything planned out, start scribbling your first paragraph. Introduce your main characters and set out the scene. The scene must be some place you know much about so that you'd be able to supply the necessary snapshot for a clearly described setting. Make your introduction interesting to hold the reader's interest and encourage them to read on to the end. It is also important to hold back significant details and the greater part of the action at this point so the mystery is kept.

8. Build up a great plot

From your introduction, draw out events that will eventually create a problem or a conflict for the main character/characters. After that, begin laying out an array of clues to keep the reader interested, intrigued and guessing. Intensify the conflict as the story moves forward. This will not only make your reader enthused to read more but will also keep them riveted to your story.

9. Show don't tell

The characters should be the ones responsible for expressing the story through their actions and dialogue and not the writer telling the reader what is being expressed. Rather than saying, "Annette was really mad at her bestfriend Christina for stealing her boyfriend", say "Annette felt an ache in her stomach and a strong pang of betrayal as Christina approaches her and flashes her with a sweet smile. She breathed hard trying to calm herself as she speaks with suppressed anger: "I hope you're happy now that you've proven yourself as a friend."

10. Use active verbs

Put as much life into your story as you can. In order to do this, employ verbs in the active voice in your story. Instead of saying,"The flower was picked by Johanna", say "Johanna picked the flower."

11. Use some dialogue

Dialogue is important in bringing your story to life. Don't just use it to pad out your characters. Use it to convey your characters to identify with the reader. Use it in direct quotes like "Go there!" instead of indirect quotes as "She told him to go there."

12. Keep references handy

A good reference such as a thesaurus or a dictionary is crucial in creating a good story. You can use them to check your spellings and to find the words which best fit your description. Instead of using one lengthy sentence or paragraph, you can utilize one or just a few words to convey what you want to say. Oftentimes, one strong word has a greater effect than a paragraph full of fancy language.

13. Conclude briefly

Conclusions are tough sledding. For a good ending, it is advisable to experiment and to add a little twist. Make your ending unique but not hanging in a loose end. Make it satisfying without making it too predictable. Keep in mind to keep it short but concise and lingering so that the reader is left with a feeling of resonance. Your conclusion should wrap up everything from start to finish.

14. Edit and revise

After fashioning the last words of your story, it is time to begin the editing cycle. Carefully go through your work and fix all your mistakes regarding sentence construction, word usage, formatting. punctuation marks, diction, spelling, grammar, and descriptive analysis. Scratch out words, phrases and even paragraphs which don't seem to contribute to the basic elements of the story. After you're done, let it sit for a while for days and even weeks, then edit it again. Reread your story over and over again at different occasions. This will make you see various things you may want to change to make your story shine at its best.

15. Let others proofread

Have your friends take a look at your work. They may just be able to see mistakes which you have missed. For instance, they may be distracted with some words or lines which you adore dearly. In this case, you have to decide on changing it or cutting it off completely.

Writing a short story may not be easy but it can surely be done. With some knowledge on the basic elements and some passion and patience, it's effortless to pull together a story with just a few ideas. Just keep in

Santa Baby (short Story) By Alex Alex
We have two girls and one boy and they all had given us memorable pregnancy moments. The youngest which is the son, was the most laborious and outlandish experience we ever had.
On my wifes first month of pregnancy, she was bugging me for eggnog every day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, eggnog always accompanies the meal. The recycle bin was so full of eggnog boxes. How I wished there were some promo attached for a vacation in each of the box. For sure, we would win for the month.
I was relieved when in May she didnt ask for eggnog instead she wanted gingerbread cookies. For goodness sake, where could I find gingerbread cookies? I had no choice but to make it on my own. Ive never baked but at that time I was obliged to do it or else I would not have a son. Every night, I would bake about twenty gingerbread cookies and that lasted for a month.
When June came, I finally retired with my gingerbread cookie making. This time, my beloved wife requested to have a Christmas tree inside the house. I rummaged through the basement to get the Christmas tree we had last year. Whenever we have guests in the house, they give us odd looks for the Christmas tree standing right in the middle of our living room.
By July, it got worse, she begged me to decorate the Christmas tree. Together with my two lovely daughters, we went about following orders from their mom as to how we would decorate the Christmas tree.
August was the month when Christmas was in the air. Twenty four hours, my beautiful wife would play Christmas songs and even in my car Christmas CDs were piled up on the dashboard.
Snowman was the man for September. Since there was still no snow around, I was forced to buy a snowman balloon to be put in front of our house.
I was astounded to find out a $2,000 bill on credit card on October. When I checked it, my wife had started her Christmas shopping in advance. Our house was filled with boxes upon boxes of gifts.
Ever got a reindeer as your pet? We did. As it turned out, my beloved demanded a reindeer so I rented Rudolph for the whole of November.
December. Finally, we came to the finale of this bizarre pregnancy. I became Santa Clause. Yes! My wife wished for Santa Clause to be there when she gives birth. Thus, I had to wear Santa Clause costume and be Santa Clause. Funny it seemed, but then at midnight of December 24, Santa came out. Im talking about our Santa, the youngest child of ours. Santa baby it is.

Chase Mountains

Socrates and Laxou agreed to visit a mountain in a place very far away. It is said that the scenery there is as beautiful as a picture. When people get there, they will have a stoned feeling.

Many years later, they met again. They all have found that the mountain was too far away. Even if they spent a lifetime, they cannot get to that fascinating place. Laxou was very depressed and said: “I have made every effort to run over, but I haven’t seen any picturesque scenery. It really made me sad!”

Socrates whisked away the dust on the robe and said: “There is much wonderful scenery on the way here. Haven’t you noticed?”

Laxou looked embarrassed and replied: “I simply run toward the distant goal. How could I have the mind to enjoy the scenery along the way?”

“That is a pity!” Socrates said, “When we seek a distant goal, we must not forget that everywhere on a journey there is beautiful scenery!”

Cherish the rights you have owned

A lion fell in love with a farmer's daughter, so it requested the farmer to let his his daughter marry it. The farmer could not bear to betroth his daughter to the beast, but he did not dare to refuse, so he came up with an idea. When the lion came to urge him, the farmer said to it: “I am willing to betroth my daughter to you, but I’m afraid of your canine claws. If you cut them, my daughter will marry you immediately.” The lion immediately agreed. It returned home to cut its fangs and claws. But in this way, the farmer was not afraid of the lion. When the lion came again, the farmer drove it away with a wooden stick.

Intention: to give up the power you’ve already owned is unwise.

New ideas: fish cannot leave the abyss, the state rewards and punishments of the weapon cannot be easily changed hands.

Description: A Harvard truth: do not easily give up one’s real power, or once losing it, it is too late to get again.

Black Cat story By saleena1230

For the most wild, but most homely narrative I am about to pen, I did not expect nor ask belief. Mad indeed would I be to expect, in a case where my very senses in their own evidence. But I'm not crazy - and certainly I have no dream. But tomorrow I die, and today I would my soul unburthen. My first goal is to qualify for the world, clearly, concisely and without comment, a series of mere household events. In their consequences, these events have terrified - have tortured - have destroyed me. But I will. not try to explain them. For me, they have presented little but Horror - to many they will seem less terrible than barroques. Then, perhaps, some intellect to find to reduce my phantasm to the common-place - some intellect more calm, more logical, and far less excitable than my own, what, where to take in the circumstances I detail with awe, nothing more than an ordinary succession of very natural causes and effects.

From my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my character. My tenderness of heart was even so conspicuous as to give me the jokes of my companions. I was particularly fond of animals, and was spoiled by my parents with a wide variety of pets. With this I have most of my time, and was never so happy as when feeding and caressing them. This peculiarity of character grew with my. growth, and in my manhood, I derived from one of my main sources of pleasure. For those who cherish an affection for a faithful and sagacious dog, I need hardly have been the difficulty of explaining the nature or intensity of the gratification thus be deduced. There is something in the unselfish and self-sacrificing love of a brute, which goes directly to the heart of him who has a regular opportunity for the paltry friendship and gossamer fidelity of mere human testing.

I married early, and was glad to find my wife a disposition not uncongenial with my own. Observing my love for pets, she lost no opportunity of buying from the most pleasant kind. We had birds, gold fish, a fine dog, rabbits, a small monkey and a cat.

The latter was a remarkably large and beautiful animal, entirely black, and sagacious to an astonishing degree. In speaking of his intelligence, my wife, who at heart was not a little tinctured with superstition, made frequent reference to the ancient popular notion that all black cats are seen as witches in disguise. Not that they ever seriously at this point - and I mention the case for no better reason than that it happens, but now, to remember.

Pluto - this was the cats name - was my favorite pet and playmate. I alone fed him, and he followed me everywhere I went home. It was even. with difficulty I could to dissuade him chasing me through the streets.

Our friendship lasted, in this way for several years, during which my general temperament and character - through the instrumentality of the Fiend Intemperance - had (I blush to confess to) a radical change for the worse. I grew, day by day, more moody, irritable, more regardless of the feelings of others. I suffered himself to violent language to use to my wife. Finally, I even offered her personal violence. My pets, of course, were made to feel the change in my character. I not only neglected, but ill-used them. For Pluto, but I retained sufficient regard to restrain me mistreat him, because I made no scruple of abusing the rabbits, the monkey, dog or even if accidentally, or through affection, they came in the way. But my disease grew upon me - for what disease is like Alcohol! - And finally, even Pluto, which are now old, and therefore a bit peevish - even Pluto began the consequences of my bad mood to experience.

One evening, back home, much intoxicated, from one of my haunts about town. I fancied that the cat avoided my presence. I grabbed him when in his fright at my violence, he inflicted a slight wound on my hand with his teeth. The fury of a demon instantly possessed me. I knew I was not. My original soul seemed, at once, in order to take flight from my body and a more than fiendish malevolence, gin-nurtured, enthusiastically every fiber of my frame. I have my vest-pocket a pen-knife, opened it, grasped the poor beast by the throat, and deliberately cut one of his eyes from the socket! I blush, I burn, I shudder,. while I pen the damnable atrocity.
Urdu stories
When reason returned with the morning - when I slept off the fumes of the night fornication - I experienced a feeling half of horror, half of remorse for the crime of which I was guilty, but it was on his best a weak and equivocal feeling, and the soul remained untouched. I again plunged into excess, and soon drowned in wine all memory of the deed.

In the meantime the cat slowly recovered. The connection of the lost eye presented, it is true, a terrible appearance, but he no longer seemed to be no pain. He left home as usual, but, as might be expected, fled in extreme terror in my approach. I had so many of my old heart left, as at first saddened by this evident dislike on the part of a creature that was once so loved me. But that feeling soon gave way to irritation. And then, as if to my final and irrevocable overthrow, the spirit of perverseness. Of this spirit philosophy takes no account. But I'm not sure that my soul lives, than I am that perverseness is one of the primitive impulses of the human heart - one of the indivisible primary faculties, or sentiments, which give direction to the character of man. Who has not, a hundred times, found himself committing a vile or a silly action, for no other reason than because he knows he should not? Have we not a perpetual inclination, in the teeth of our best judgment, to violate that which is Law, merely because we understand that they are such? This spirit of perverseness, I say, came to my last fall. It was this unfathomable longing of the soul to get VEX - to offer violence to his own nature - the wrong thing for the wrong reasons only - that urged me to continue and finally to consummate the injury I had inflicted on the innocent brute. One morning, in cool blood, I slipped a noose around his neck and hung on the branch of a tree - hung it with the tears from my eyes, and with the bitterest remorse in my heart - hung it because I knew that had loved me, and because I felt it had given me no reason. offense - hung it because I knew that doing this I was committing a sin - a deadly sin that so jeopardize my immortal soul to places - if such a thing wore possible - even beyond the reach of the infinite mercy of the Merciful and most terrible God.

On the night of the day on which this cruel deed was done, I was awakened from sleep by the cry of fire. The curtains of my bed were in flames. The whole house was blazing. It was with great difficulty that my wife, a servant, and I, our escape from the blaze. The devastation was complete. My entire worldly wealth was swallowed up, and I resigned myself now to despair.

I am above the weakness of looking for a series of cause and effect to establish, between the disaster and the atrocity. But I am where a chain of facts - and not want to leave even a possible link imperfect. On the day following the fire, I visited the ruins. The walls, with one exception, had fallen in. This exception was found in a compartment wall, not very thick, which stood in the middle of the house, and against which had rested the head of my bed. The plastering had here, in great measure, resisted the action of the fire - a fact which I attributed to her that recently spread. About this wall a dense crowd were collected, and many people seemed to be examining a particular portion of the very small and enthusiastic attention. The words "strange!" "Singular!" and other similar expressions, excited my curiosity. I went and saw, as if carved in bas-relief on the white surface, the figure of a gigantic cat. The impression was given with an accuracy truly marvelous. There was a cable over the neck animals.

When I first saw this apparition - for I could hardly see it as less - my wonder and my terror were extreme. But at length reflection came. my help. The cat, I remembered, was hung in a garden beside the house. After the alarm of fire, this garden had been immediately filled by the crowd - by someone from whom the animal must be cut from the tree and thrown, through an open. window in my room. This was probably done with the view of arousing me from sleep. The falling of other walls had compressed the victim of my cruelty into the substance of the freshly-spread plaster, the lime of which, with the flames, and ammonia from the carcass, had then succeeded in creating a portrait as I saw it.

Although I direct my good reason, especially if not on my conscience, for the startling fact just detailed, but not the less not a deep impression on my imagination. For. months I could not rid myself of the illusion of the cat, and in this period, came back into my spirit a half-feeling that seemed, but was not, remorse. I even went as far to the loss of the animal regret, and look about me, among the vile haunts which now usually I visited for another pet of the same species, and somewhat similar appearance, which is in place to deliver.

One evening as I sat, half stupified, in a den of more than shame, my attention was suddenly drawn to some black object, resting on the head of one of the immense hogsheads of Gin, or Rum, which constituted the main furniture of the apartment. I had steadily to the top of this hogshead few minutes, and what now caused me surprise was the fact that I had not seen the object before them. I approached it, and hit him with my hand. It was a black cat - a very large - fully as large as Pluto, and closely resembling him in every respect but one. Pluto had no white hair on any part of his body, but this cat had a large but indefinite of the white spot that almost the entire area of %u200B%u200Bthe breast. When I touched him, he immediately arose, purred loudly, rubbed against my hand, and seemed very happy with my post. This was the creature that I was looking. I at once offered to buy it from the landlord, but this person made no claim to it - knew nothing of it - never seen before.

I continued my caresses, and when I prepared to go home, the animal evinced a tendency to accompany me. I permitted. to do that, occasionally stooping and patting it as I went. To achieve the internal IT domesticated itself at once, and immediately became a big favorite with my wife.

As for me, I soon found a dislike to arise in me. This was exactly the opposite of what I expected, but - I do not know how or why it was - its evident fondness for myself rather disgusted and angry. By slow degrees, these feelings of disgust and annoyance rose into the bitterness of hatred. I avoided the creature, a sense of shame, and the remembrance of my former deed of cruelty, preventing me from physically abusing. I have not, for a few weeks, strike, or otherwise violently ill, but gradually - very gradually - I came to them looking with unutterable loathing, and to flee silently from its odious presence, as the breath of a pestilence.

What added, no doubt, to my hatred of the beast, was the discovery, on the morning after I brought it home, which, like Pluto, it was also deprived of one of his eyes. That fact, however, only loved it to my wife, who, as I have said, to possess a high degree, that humanity of feeling which had once been my distinguishing trait, and the source of many of my simplest and purest pleasures .

With my aversion to this cat, but his love for myself seemed to increase. It followed my footsteps with a tenacity that it would be difficult for the reader to understand. As I sat, it would crouch beneath my chair, or spring upon my knees, that with me are disgusting caresses. If I was running would come between my feet and stuff. nearly throw me down, or, fastening its long and sharp claws in my dress, clamber, in this way, on my chest. At such moments, although I longed to destroy it with a bang, I still remember to do, partly by a memory of my former crime, but - let me confess at once - by absolute fear of the beast.

This fear was not really a fear of physical harm - and I'd be at a loss how otherwise to define it. I'm almost ashamed to own - yes, even in these cell criminals, I'm almost ashamed to own - that the terror and horror with which the animal inspired me, was reinforced by one of the smallest chimeras it would be possible to conceive. My wife had called my attention, more than once, the character of the mark of white hair, which I have spoken, and that the only visible difference between the strange beast and the ones I had were destroyed. The reader will recall that the mark, although large, was originally very indefinite, but by slow degrees - degrees nearly imperceptible, and which. a long time my Reason difficult to reject as fanciful - it had, at length, assumed a rigorous clarity of outline. It was now the representation of an object that I shudder to name - and for this, above all, I loathed and feared, and I would have to break free of the monster had I dared - it was now, I say, the image of a terrible - a terrible thing - the gallows! - Oh, mournful and terrible engine of Horror and Crime - of Agony and of Death!

And now was I indeed. wretched beyond the wretchedness of mere Humanity. And a brute beast - whose fellow I had contemptuously destroyed - a brute beast to work out for me - for me a man, fashioned in the image of the High God - so much of insufferable wo! Alas! nor by day. nor by night knew I the blessing of Rest any more! During the first the creature left me no moment alone, and the last I started, hourly, from dreams of unutterable fear, the hot breath of the thing on my face, and his enormous weight - a. incarnate Night-Mare that I had no power to shake off - the task forever in my heart!

Under the pressure of torments such as these, the weak remnant of the good within me succumbed. Evil thoughts became my sole intimates - the darkest and most evil of thoughts. The moodiness. of my usual temper increased to hatred of all things and of all mankind, while the sudden, frequent and uncontrollable outbursts of anger which I now blindly myself, my uncomplaining wife, alas leave! was the most common and most of the patient from the patient.

One day she accompanied me on some domestic message, in the basement of the old building which our poverty compelled us to inhabit. The cat followed me up the steep stairs, and nearly throwing me headlong, irritated me to madness. Uplifting an ax, and forgetting, in my wrath, the childish fear which had hitherto stayed my hand, I aimed a blow on the animal which, of course, would have proved instantly fatal had it descended as I wished. But this blow was arrested by the hand of my wife. Inspired by the interference, into a rage more than demoniacal, I withdrew my arm. from her grasp and buried the ax in her brains. She fell dead on the spot without a groan.

This hideous murder accomplished, I myself immediately, and with full deliberation, the task of hiding the body. I knew I could not remove from the house, either by day or by night, without the risk of being perceived by the neighbors. Many projects in my mind. At one period I thought of cutting the body into tiny fragments, and destroying them by fire. On another, I decided to dig a grave in the floor of the basement. Again, I deliberated about casting it into the well on the property - some packed in a box, as merchandise, with the usual arrangements, and so getting a porter to take it from the house. Eventually I got what I consider a much better tool than one of these. I decided to go to the wall in the cellar - as the monks of the medieval walled be included to their victims.

For use as this the cellar well adapted. The walls were loosely constructed, and had lately been plastered with a rough plaster, making the humidity of the atmosphere had prevented from hardening. In addition, in one of the walls with a projection, caused by an incorrect or chimney stove, which had been filled and to appear to the red of the cellar. I have no doubt that I could easily lift the stones at this point, insert the corpse, and wall the whole as before, so that no eye could detect anything suspicious. And in this calculation I was not deceived. By means of a crowbar I easy detachment of the bricks, after carefully deposited the body against the inner I placed in that position, while with very little effort reconstructed I, the entire structure as originally was. After obtaining mortar, sand, and hair, with every precaution, I prepared a plaster which could not. be distinguished from the old, and with this I very carefully went over the new brickwork. When I finished, I felt satisfied that it was good. The wall is not present at least looks to be disturbed. The mess on the floor was picked up with the smallest concern. I looked around triumphantly, and said to myself - "Here at least, then, my labor has not been in vain."

My next step was to search for the beast that was the cause of much misery, because I had, at length, determined to kill it. Had I been able to meet it at the moment, there can be no doubt about his fate, but it appeared that the crafty animal had been alarmed by the violence of my previous anger, and forebore to present itself in my present mood. It is impossible to describe or to imagine the deep, the blissful sense of relief that the absence of the hated animals caused in my bosom. It did not make its appearance during the night - and thus for one night at least, since its introduction in the house, I actually slept quietly and, yes, even slept with the burden of murder upon my soul!

The second and third day passed and still my tormentor came not. Once again I breathed as a free man. The monster, in terror, had fled the building forever! I see it no more! My happiness was supreme! The guilt of my dark deed disturbed me but little. Some questions were few, but this was quickly answered. Even a search was instituted - but of course nothing was to be discovered. I looked at my future happiness and security.

On the fourth day of the assassination, a party of the police came, very unexpectedly, into the house, and went back to strict investigation into the building to make. Safe, but in the inscrutability of my place. of concealment, I felt no embarrassment whatever. The officers bade me accompany them in their search. They left no nook or corner unexplored. Finally, for the third or fourth time, they descended to the basement. I quivered not a muscle. My heart hit calm as those of one who slumbers in innocence. I walked the cellar from beginning to end. I hit my arms on my lap, and roamed easily to and fro. The police were thoroughly satisfied and prepared to leave. The glee at my heart was too strong to be blocked. I burned to say if. just a word, by way of triumph, and make double sure their assurance of my guiltlessness.

"Gentlemen," I said finally, if the party up the stairs, "I delight to have removed your suspicions I wish you all health, and a little more courtesy by the bye, gentlemen, this - ... Is this a very good built house. "[In the rabid desire to say something easily, I scarcely knew what I uttered at all.] -" I can tell an excellent well constructed house These walls are you going, gentlemen - these walls are solidly put together; . " And here, through the mere phrenzy of bravado, I knocked heavily with a stick which I held in my hand, that very part of the brickwork behind which stood the corpse of the wife of my bosom.

But may God to shield and deliver me from the fangs of the Arch-Fiend! No sooner had the reverberation of my blows sunk into silence than I was answered by a voice from the grave! - With a cry, at first muffled and broken, like the sobbing of a child, and then quickly swelling into a long, loud, and continuous scream, utterly anomalous and inhuman - a howl - a wailing shriek, half of horror and half of triumph, but as might have arisen from hell, jointly from the throats of the dammed in their pain and the demons that exult in the damnation.

From my own mind it. is folly to speak. Swoon, I staggered to the opposite wall. For a moment the party on the stairs remained motionless, through extremity of terror and of awe. In the following, a dozen strong arms were toiling at the wall. It fell bodily. The corpse, already dilapidated and clotted with gore, stood erect before the eyes of the spectators. On his head, with red extended mouth and solitary eye of fire, sat the hideous beast whose craft had seduced me into murder, and whose height voice that I had sent the executioner. I had walled the monster in the grave!

Halloween's True Story

Halloween's True Story By David Merkel
Just few people know about the entire story of its origins. In this article, I will tell the real true story of  Halloween.
The story of Halloween story begins over 2,000 years ago in one area that today comprises the United Kingdom, Ireland, and a section of France where a group of people known as Celts celebrated Samhain on November 1 - their New Year. This celebration also denoted the commencement of Winter with its cold and blackness coupled with the termination of Summer and its warmth and sunshine. The Winter season in their belief was related to death and, most importantly for us, the night before Samhain - the separations between the living and the dead became intermingled.
Crops were burned and animals were sacrificed to their Gods over huge bonfires that were built by their clergy - the Druids. Animal skins and heads were utilized as costumes as their Priests forecast the futures of the individual Celts. The Druid prophecies were looked upon as a source of solace in the coming desolate months of Winter. At the end of the evening of celebration - the Celts lit their small torches, took them home, and used them to light their fires that would last through the entire Winter season. It was on the night of October 31st that they believed the dead might return to damage the community food supply and create havoc. After the Romans conquered the Celtic territories they combined two of their festivals with Samhain. One commemorated those that had passed away and the other was related to a celebration of fruits and trees. The focused fruit of this festival was the apple which explains the custom of 'bobbing' for apples to this day.
In the first millennium AD...the Pope of the day, Boniface IV decreed that November 1st would be known as All Saints Day in honor of all martyrs and saints. It is today understood that this designation was an attempt to replace the Celtic celebration with one that was sanctioned by the Church. It is not so well-known that the Mid-English translation of All Saints Day was All-Hallows or All-Hallowmas..??
Moving toward the middle of the 20th century - Halloween found itself in a revived mode due to the baby boom of the 40s and trick-or-treating realized a huge resurgence which helped create a brand new North American tradition. It is estimated that more than $6 Billion is spent annually on this holiday ranking it second in importance of all holidays - only behind Christmas in importance and the all-important....retail revenues.
Traditions play heavily when celebrating Halloween. Those that wear costumes are giving respect to its European and Celtic roots while our Native Americans believe in evil spirits and the descendants of African slaves adhere to the tradition of black magic. The British wear nuts as charms to ward off the Devil who was believed to be a nut gatherer and the Welsh believed that if you sneezed on that day you blew your soul out of your body. We must not forget the belief that children born on this day can visualize and carry on conversations with a wide variety of supernatural beings.
In closing it deserves to be noted that our celebration of Halloween has invented new traditions in costuming and donations of money. The costumes are showing a resurgence of traditional types known as vintage plus those of movie stars, pop art performers, athletes and politicians. It appears as if the door-to-door approach is becoming the venue of younger children who are accompanied by one parent, at minimum. The older youths tend to gravitate to house parties or costume parties where prizes reward them for their costuming efforts.
This is the story of Halloween as it has been written in many, many publications that are found online or in your local public library. I trust that I have done a credible job in assembling it for you and that it is easily understandable for everyone.
Thank You

Wonderful Cinderella story

Wonderful Cinderella story By Spencer Wood

Whenever we hear about a wonderful underdog or ‘Cinderella’ story our collective hearts and imagination are quickly captured. We embrace the awe inspiring success of the individual or the team involved, yet we also find ourselves trying to understand the reason for the success. ‘How did this wonderful thing happen?’ we ask ourselves. This past year, on one of the biggest sports stages in the world, David slew Goliath once again. In a thrilling overtime game that will no doubt quickly become a ‘March Madness Classic,’ Jim Larranaga’s scrappy underdogs - George Mason - defeated the mighty Uconn Huskies coached by the legendary Jim Calhoun, to advance to the Final Four. And as the nation embraced their new Cinderella, we once again found ourselves searching for the story within the story – What brought about this compelling victory? Without doubt, immediate credit must be given to the George Mason players whose outstanding offensive execution and gritty defense was consistent, intense and team-centric. Yet, the real story within the story is revealed when we begin to understand the reasons behind the great execution, selfless team play and intensity – solid teaching and leadership.

Leadership has always been a popular topic of research and discussion, but today’s sports, corporate and social climate has underscored a need for effective leadership that has never been greater. As I travel around the country I am often asked “Of all the leadership traits, which do you think are the greatest?” Whenever I hear this question, I find myself making a very strong case for the following two leadership/teaching attributes – Integrity, and the Ability to Make Others Better.

Integrity:

A father once took his two children to the local fair. The man had a 12 year old, and a 5 year old. The sign on the ticket booth read “Adults $10, children 5 and over $5, and children 4 and under - free.” The man’s 5 year old looked young for his age, and could so easily have passed for a 4 year old infant. The children looked on in silence as the father reached for his wallet. “1 adult and 2 children,” he said as he passed a $20 bill across the counter. The women in the booth looked at him somewhat surprised, “you could have got the little one in for free and just asked for 1 adult and 1 child, and I would never have known that your youngest was over 4.” “They would have known” the man replied.

Many definitions of the word ‘integrity’ exist, but a very succinct definition is ‘an individual who does what they said they would do.’ Integrity begins with the coaching staff. Without an integrity mentor or ‘model,’ athletes sometimes have few guidelines to follow. The thing I find most interesting about integrity within the coaching staff is that sometimes we all look to avoid the ‘big’ things that would potentially damage our integrity – misappropriation of athletic funds, sexual misconduct with a player, etc. However, as damaging as these incidents are to any program, they are for the most part fairly uncommon. Most of the damage to the integrity of a coach or a program is usually caused by the smaller, much more subtle decisions. As the maxim goes, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” The decision to allow a ‘hard and fast rule’ to slide a little or to treat our better players a little differently may not seem like a big deal at the time. In fact, in less than a day or two our actions may be a distant memory in our own minds. But like the children at the fair in the opening story, our players may remember those subtle actions for the rest of their lives. Athletes work harder and play harder for the coaches and programs they truly respect. That respect is evident in the joy and enthusiasm that the George Mason players have for the game, their coach, and their teammates. You get a sense they truly enjoy playing for coach Jim Larranaga.

A coach who brings great integrity to a program will be able to recruit and develop athletes that also exhibit this key trait. An athlete with personal integrity will be a champion for your team rules and your team culture. This trait is critical. Integrity is an attribute that is possible to lose, and once lost, this attribute is very difficult to get back. For coaches making leadership choices (i.e., selecting team captains etc), choose carefully in this area. No matter how talented the athlete, if they do not have personal integrity then they can lead your program down paths that can poison a team and an entire season. Athletes with great personal integrity are a joy to coach. They help turn good teams into great teams and are the backbone of great team culture. Making Others Better:

How do we define the ability to ‘make others better?’ I believe this leadership trait transcends mere knowledge and teaching ability. Many coaches have great knowledge, and many of these coaches may also be great teachers who produce highly skilled athletes, but this does not necessarily make these coaches great leaders. In a similar manner, there are many athletes whose raw athletic ability, skill and court savvy may influence a teammate to perform better, but these abilities do not necessarily make these highly skilled athletes great leaders. ‘Making others better’ has as much to do with affecting how an athlete feels about himself/ herself off-court as it does influencing an athlete’s on-court performance.

Let me illustrate this point by briefly discussing a famous anecdote involving two giant historical figures in world leadership. In the mid-19th Century, William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli were bitter political rivals who had tremendous influence over European and many aspects of World policy. They were known as well connected, highly intelligent and accomplished statesmen. An influential socialite during this era who often hosted elaborate parties for the rich and famous, decided to throw a party and invite both Gladstone and Disraeli with the intention of spending a few minutes to interview and learn more about each of them. After the party, one of her guests was highly curious about her meetings with her two honored guests. “Tell me” he asked, “What was Gladstone like?” “When I had finished speaking with him,” the host responded, “I was convinced he was the smartest man in Europe .” “So tell me,” the guest continued, “What was Disraeli like?” “When I had finished speaking with him,” the host answered, “I was convinced I was the smartest woman in Europe .” Great leaders find a way of bringing out the best in individuals both on and off the court, understanding that self-esteem and confidence has as much to do with on-court performance as a well executed run-and-jump defense or half-court set offense. Coach Jim Larranaga can obviously teach the game (as evidenced by the almost flawless execution of his game plan), but the story within this story is the way he has effectively developed a team of confident young men. Even though George Mason would advance no further in the tournament than the semi-finals, the lessons that coach Jim Larranaga and the 2006 NCAA Tournament imprinted on the player’s self-esteem and confidence will no doubt impact them for the rest of their lives.

Great leadership qualities within the coaching staff will help identify, recruit, and develop great leadership qualities among the players. Great leadership among the players will help the coaches to establish an all-important leadership culture that will permeate every aspect of the program and establish great player accountability that is as much player driven as it is coach driven. These are the programs that embody integrity and a culture that makes others better. These are the programs that compete to their potential, graduate their players, build a legacy, and every so often provide us with a Cinderella story for the ages.
